SESSION TOPIC: Top Trends in Digital Marketing

Sean Carton is the Director of the Center for Digital Communication, Commerce, and Culture at the University of Baltimore. He is also a Professor of Practice in the Merrick School of Business Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship and also teaches in the School of Communication Design. As the founder of one of Baltimore’s first Web development firms in 1995, the founding Dean of the School of Design and Media at Philadelphia University, and the co-author of one of the first books about the Web (The Mosaic Quick Tour series) in 1993, Sean has over 20 years experience designing, developing, planning, and executing interactive media.

Sean has published 8 books about the Internet, technology, business, and video games and writes regular columns for ClickZ.com and Publish.com as well as contributing to magazines such as Wired, Revolution, Stim, and POV. Sean is a sought after public speaker on issues of marketing, technology, and the Internet and has delivered keynote addresses to organizations such as EduWeb, EDUCAUSE, the Florida Telecommunications Industry Association, and the American Marketing Association in the US as well as to organizations in Italy and the UK. Sean holds a DCD from the University of Baltimore where he focused on digital communication theory and the development of new digital communications strategies. His doctoral project involved re-imagining online search using graphical (rather than text-based) interfaces. He earned an MA in English Literature from the University of Maryland, College Park and a BA in English/Psychology from UMBC. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in social media, digital culture, entrepreneurship, and online marketing at UB, UMBC, Goucher College, and Philadelphia University. Sean also serves as Chief Creative Officer at idfive, a Baltimore-based digital agency.

Julia Quinn is the driving force in building Amtrak’s social media program from scratch and has quickly brought it to the forefront within the transit industry. Julia is responsible for managing and executing programs that infuse smart, creative and measurable digital components into integrated communication campaigns that focus on advancing Amtrak’s vision and strategic plan. Julia is responsible for coordinating with groups across Amtrak to develop and execute a clearly defined social media strategy that meets the needs of all internal stakeholders while maintaining consistency of the Amtrak message and brand in the digital space.

Prior to working at Amtrak, she developed and executed strategic online marketing, communications and business intelligence campaigns for Fortune 500 companies at New Media Strategies. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Communication from American University and was named one of Mass Transit magazine’s 2013 Top 40 Under 40.

Gus Sentementes joined Johns Hopkins University in December 2012 as the audience engagement manager. He oversees the university’s social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and other online channels, and works with staff to develop novel social media strategies. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Sentementes was a reporter with The Baltimore Sun, and an active blogger and social media practitioner. He holds a bachelors degree from Fairfield University and a masters degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
